Why doors and windows in retrofitting projects are crucial

Doors and windows in retrofitting offer benefits other than just aesthetics. Explore the key reasons they are crucial for energy efficiency.

Whilst windows and doors can give a newly retrofitted home a nice modern look (we certainly have a range of finishes and styles to suit our clients), they are so much more important to efficiency and offer a range of other benefits than just polished aesthetics. In this article, let’s explore some of the key reasons why we offer window and door fittings as part of our energy efficient whole house solution.

Improved energy efficiency

It’s commonly known that double or triple glazed windows and insulated doors will improve the heat retention of properties. But do you know just how significant the improvements can be? According to UK government statistics, 18% of heat loss from properties is from their windows, and single glazed windows lose heat twice as fast as double glazing. Fitting double glazing to a single glazed home could save residents up to £155 a year on energy bills, with energy efficient doors providing similar potentials.

A comfortable temperature

Over time, older windows and doors that may have even been considered efficient begin to degrade. Degrading of weather stripping, sealants and even fittings in time can lead to gaps that allow cold air to enter a property. Technology has moved on too, windows built before the millennium (and even some built after) were engineered to accommodate for different weather conditions and energy consumption costs that are now very prevalent in our modern world. A lot of traditional windows are weather proofed with basic paint and caulking which can lead to condensation and moisture that not only makes your home cold, but also degrades your windows over time. Replacing windows and doors will ensure less cold air and moisture flows into the property, ensuring residents can maintain a consistent comfortable temperature within their homes.

Better security

Our retrofitting projects are designed to improve quality of life for residents. As occupiers become more comfortable in their homes, we equally want to leave them feeling more secure within them. Modern windows are fitted with UV protection coatings that can protect a resident’s possessions from UV damage by up to 75%.

To protect residents further we have partnered with the ACPO (Association of Chief Police officers) to initiate a scheme of installing doors and windows that meet Secured by Design standards. With their stronger frames and enhanced locking mechanisms, the association has seen a reduced crime risk of up to 75% since the project began.

Not only does it protect the occupant, it also can protect a properties value, with installations of modern energy efficient doors and windows reportedly increasing a homes value by upwards of 10%.
