Across the UK we’re leading the transition from conventional heating methods that burn fossil fuels to low-carbon solutions such as heat pumps. The technology hasn’t been met with criticism, however we’re here to tell you why air source heat pumps are a viable renewable energy source and how Westdale Midlands ensures your residents get the optimum performance when we install them.
A sceptics standpoint
The sceptics will tell you that the more heat pumps are installed, the higher the demand on the electricity grid. Furthermore, they may also say that generating electricity burns fossil fuels so it’s no better for the environment than traditional heat generating methods.
Tackling the Fossil fuels standpoint
Let’s tackle the fossil fuels argument first. here in the UK, the National Grid have been quoted as suggesting 43% of our electricity generation came from zero-carbon sources, overtaking how much the UK acquires from fossil fuels. In 2023 the UK produced enough electricity to power UK homes for 12 years via renewable energy sources. It took 50 years to produce that level of power, but it is suggested it will only take five years to generate that level of power again. So, electricity is a lower carbon, more environmentally friendly method in generating power.
Tackling the demands on the grid standpoint

The second point is that air source heat pump adoption will generate higher demand on the electricity grid. Well on the surface that appears to be true, but the reality is very different. Air source heat pumps are actually capable of generating up to 4 and a half units of heat whilst only using 1 unit of electricity. This makes them highly efficient heating resources for homes, better for the environment and for residents’ energy bills. Moreover, on decreasing bill expenditure, heat pumps are intelligent in measuring external weather and temperatures to measure how much heat to pump into the home. They can also take electricity from the grid during off peak times, effectively pre-heating homes at peak times using lower tariffs. The capability that an air source heat pump could have in meeting Net zero emission goals is staggering, if operated correctly.
Heat pumps the Westdale way
Our installers are passionate about installing solutions for residents that will help improve not only their quality of life and reduce their energy bills, but equally satisfy energy consumption goals for the client. How do we achieve this? Put simply, we recommend the solution where it’s appropriate to do so. We offer a whole house solution for energy efficiency including solar panels, EWI and battery storage, we treat heat pumps as the precipice of a bigger efficiency eco-system.

Our installers are trained to take the needs of the resident into account. Westdale Midlands installers will configure the heat pump specifically to the heat efficiency of the property, with full weather compensation and flow rate optimisation aligned accordingly. Our dedicated resident support teams ensure that users understand how to get the optimum performance out of a heat pump system, tackling not only operational factors, but how the technology works to ensure that residents leave their heat pump continually on.
